Indra Jatra, also known as Yenyā, is an eight-day long festival which
falls in September and is considered one of the biggest and exciting
festival of the Newar community of the Kathmandu Valley. Indra Jatra is a
compilation of various performances and rituals. One can observe major
attractions including masked dancers known as “Lakhey” dancing on the
streets almost every evening accompanied by loud music of drums, Living
Goddess’ i.e Kumari’s chariot procession. Kathmandu Durbar Square glowing with oil wicks and a large pile of foods i.e. Samay baji being placed on different locations.
Stories Inside Himalayas is an approach to make people aware that Nepal
is not only about the Himalayas or temples. Its beauty & simplicity
is beyond that. It’s about the life time experience that we cater to
our visitors. For our first episode, we have Mr. Anil Chitrakar to give
us more insights on the historical reasons behind the celebration of
Indra Jatra. The eight-day long Indra Jatra festival falls in September
and is one of the most exciting and revered festivals of the Newar
community of the Kathmandu Valley. This also marks the beginning of a
month-long festival season of autumn. It begins with the erection of a
wooden pole made of pine at Basantapur Sqaure in front of the old
Hanuman Dhoka.
